Guidelines For Protecting Nails

While gel manicures can be beautiful and long-lasting, they can be very difficult on nails. Gel manicures can cause brittle, peeling, and cracked nails, and repeated use can increase the risk of skin cancer and premature aging of the skin on your hands.

To keep nails healthy before, during, and after a manicure, dermatologists recommend the following tips:

Stay in positive contact with your manicurist. Ask if the tools have been disinfected, and look around to make sure he or she is the cleaning and disinfecting the tools after each client. Also, never ask your manicurist to push or cut the cuticle, as this can lead to inflammation and infection.

Consider using traditional nail polish instead of gel polish. This is especially important if you have recurring nail problems or are allergic to acetone, which is needed to remove the gel polish.

Wear sunscreen. Before applying a gel manicure, apply a broad-spectrum, waterproof sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher to your hands to prevent skin cancer and premature aging. This will help protect your skin from the UV rays used to seal the nail polish gel onto your nails. Another option is to wear dark opaque gloves with opaque fingertips before painting nail polish.

Avoid gel nail polish. When the color begins to peel off, do not remove it with a polish or other nail or tool. Instead, make an appointment with your manicurist to remove the polish.

Just soak the fingertips in acetone. To remove nail polish, protect the surrounding skin by simply dipping the fingertips into acetone instead of the entire hand or finger. Another option is to use a cotton ball to remove the polish. Soak a cotton ball in acetone, wrap a small piece of aluminum foil around your fingertips, and apply it to your nails. This ensures that only the nail is in contact with the acetone. After about 15 minutes, the nail polish should come off immediately.

To take care of your nails between manicures, dermatologists recommend the following steps:

Enjoy nail polish vacations. Try not to wear nail polish for a week or two or more. This will give your nails time to repair.

Hydrate your nails. Apply a moisturizer such as vaseline to nails and skin several times a day before polishing. This minimizes brittleness and helps prevent nail fragmentation.

In addition, there are some problems with gel polish.

How to remove gel nail polish?

Due to its chemical resistance, the gel polish is not easily rubbed off with acetone and must be filed and/or dipped directly into acetone for a few minutes to loosen the hardened gel from the nails. It's a process, but it's important to remove the gel nail polish the right way, not just to remove it.

Will gel polish hurt my nails?

The good news is that the gel polish itself won't hurt your nails. However, picking in a gel polish can damage your nails. If you choose a polish and peel it, you will inevitably strip away part of the natural nail, making it thinner and weaker.

Can gel polishes dry without UV?

Can't. Gel polish is completely different from regular nail polish, requiring ultraviolet or LED light to form a hard coating.
